Entry and Exit criteria are the conditions which when satisfies; the test team starts (enters) the testing process and stops (exits) it.

Suspension and Resumption criteria are the conditions which when satisfies; the test team temporarily suspends (suspension) the testing process and resumes (resumption) it.

A test process may have to be suspended temporarily until the show stopper bugs are resolved.

Re: Suspension/Resumption Criteria in a Software Testing

Suspension/Resumption Criteria in a Software Testing depends on working of build.Whether the build is working properly or not.

Entry/Exit Criteria depends on time, milestones and project deadlines.

Suspension/Resumption Criteria in a Software Test Plan :
If any defects are found which seriously impact the test progress the test lead may choose to supend testing.

The criteria which are considered for suspension or resumption are :
[a] hardware / software not available at the time indicated in the project schedule
[b] the build contians many serious defects which seriously prevent or limit testing progress
[c] Assigned test resources are not available when needed by the test team

    Resumption Criteria :
If testing is suspended, resumption will only occur when the problem(s) that caused the suspension have been resolved. When a critical defect is the cause of the suspension, the “FIX” must be verified by the testing team before testing is resumed

Suspension CriteriaThis section outlines the circumstances that would result in the partial or complete suspension of testing.
    This include:
    • A severity 1 incident, raised for a catastrophic failure of the system functionality renders the solution unusable and where no acceptable workaround has been identified.
    • In case if any major feature or set of functionalities in the built system is not implemented as expected by the customer.
    • The number of open incidents produce a situation where they cumulatively mean testing has no value at a given point in time. In such circumstances it makes little or no sense to continue to test and waste precious resource and time.
    • System downtime or environment downtime.

The data points for the above situations need to be provided to customer project manager immediately by the testing team once the situation arises. Customer project manager has the authority to suspend the testing activities partially or completely. Partial or complete suspension depends on the severity of the incident or causes in terms of effort, project time lines, rework and waste of labor.

    Resumption Requirements
The suspended testing would be decided to resume by customer project manager once adequate fix for the identified issue or set of issues have been provided and deployed in testing environment.

In case of system downtime and environment downtime, smoke testing need to be performed and confirmed by the testing team before resuming the testing once intimated by the concerned owner of the issue that the environment/system is up and running.

Disagreement or discrepancy on implementation expectation would be a customer project manager call whether to resume testing or complete suspension till a new build is provided matching the expectation or go ahead with the current build and implementation model.

As a best practice, testing team is expected to capture the time lost during the suspended duration.

Suspension criteria specify the criteria to be used to suspend all or a portion of the testing activities while resumption criteria specify when testing can resume after it has been suspended. bit.ly/1UrlIet
