Is Core Java and J2EE , the same?

Hi, Am a Recruiter. Recently, my colleague and I had an arguement over the difference b/w Core Java and J2EE? My client had asked for candidates who are strong in core java with JSP and Servlets on a struts framework. Whereas, my colleague argued saying that a person who has worked in JSP and Servlets will surely know Core Java, as both are the same.
Is Core Java and J2EE, one and the same? If so, why does my client specifically ask for a candidate who is strong in Core Java with JSP and Servlets? Pls. explain. Are they different? If so, how are they different?

    Regards,
    San.

J2EE is an extension of java i.e. Core Java does not include all J2EE aspects.
While a person working with JSP and servlets ideally should be well-conversed with core java because the language is java, it may not be necessarily true. Quite a lot of routine servlet maintenance may be done even with a light knowledge of java constructs if the coder has programmed in some other OOP language.
Also JSP+servlets are a miniscule part of j2ee So even if a persons knows this, it can't be guaranteed he/she knows j2ee per se.

Thanks Ciph3r , for the clarification!
Can you tell me what are the areas or aspects of technology, a person should be strong in to call himself a specialist in Core Java ?

Re: Is Core Java and J2EE , the same?

Defining a Java expert is a tough call. However anybody with decent java knowhow has to have a good grasp over OOP concepts wrt Java(eg: java's method of supporting multiple inheritance non-explicitly etc etc) , multi-threading, java collections' usage, generics, error-handling paradigms, JVM basics, Garbage collection fundamentals , inner classes + the numorous java language features obviously.

Design patterns are some other things which an expert always has a good grasp of .. and maybe Swing/AWT as they encompass most of core java features, but then they are not a necessary part I guess as one may not have worked on graphics.

Everything depends on the job profile. If it's core product development then the computer science skills expertise would be a better bet than just a specific language skills. Just my 2 cents.

    Hi Sanmati,
Actually core java is used to programming in jsp and servlet. Simplly says if you know core java, in other words if your concept of core java is so good you do not face any problem to expert in any advance java concept like jsp, servlet etc...

    Hi Sanmathi,
It's me amulu. Java is a object oriented and a cross platform language. cross platform means it can run across several platforms whereas j2ee is a set of specifications and practices that allows the application developer to develop, deploy and manage multi - tier server centric applications.

Re: Is Core Java and J2EE , the same?

Actually the main theam of the Core java and j2ee is,
in core java we have to learn the basic feature (oops concept, theading, exceptions...)that are available in java, where as in j2ee we have advanced features like web application developement , enterprice application developement..etc. these follows basic knowledge of core java.
i hope u will get my answer

Re: Is Core Java and J2EE , the same?

As per the bifercation given by Sun micro system . The Java techonology is divided into three parts
    1. J2SE(Java standard Edition)
    2. J2ME(Java Micro Edition)
    2 J2EE(Java Enterprise Edition)
Apart from these whatever terminology we use does not adhere to industry standard.
