How to output values, then make it input?

Need some help from you as I'm brand new to QTP (no training).

I created a script that will add bunch of products, description, & etc. using a global datasheet for a web app. For each record, it will generate an id. Now I need to verify if these records saved to the Oracle db correctly or not by opening these records, perform some updates, resave.

1. What /how is the typical way for people doing the updates on the records that QTP created? i.e. Output becomes input?
2. Since I can't output the text from the web page (The id is saved as read-only text) as mentioned in qtp book, what should I do?
3. Should I use sql to retrieve a list of records (how do I uniquely identify these records?), then populate these records to the data table so that qtp can open it?

Thank you so much!
Jessica
