I want to have a detail understanding about root servers in internet terminology. The only thing I knew about root servers is it helps to control traffic and maintain routes in internet. But how is this achieved, what is the working methodology of these root servers.

Many different organizations maintain the servers on the root server system. Root server is one central server that replicates changes to the other servers on a daily basis.

Root server is not a single server but a group of servers, I think 13 but not sure, at the top of internet name space. It means there a group of servers, to load balance, which contains same information and are referred as root or ".". For more details plz refer:
