Relationship between SQL server, database and database applications

Can someone please tell me the difference and relationship between SQL server, database and database applications? I have asked several people in the IT department where i work, and they seem to know less than a teenager.

Anyway, will someone please explain to me the aforementioned questions, I am sure it is simple, but I am just not grasping it because every IT person tells me something different.

Confused and Tired,

Lisa
