Linux and UNIX both are efficient operating system and provide secured, improved performance oriented operations with the functions and features both have. But which is better of the two operating system and why?

Well thera are a lot of things to consider. Untill SUN made solris a free OS, UNIX was not free. In fact the very idea of starting Linux was, to have a free UNIX. So, linux scores here. Linux is freely available in various flavours, which is more, a lot of these distributions are good.

I have never worked on Solaris, so I don't know how it's GUI is like. But recent KDE And gNOME GUIs look stunning. (Specially KDE). So, user friendliness has improved to great deal in Linux.

There are a lot of free applications/softwares available for Linux which are FREE. BUt, you will have to pay for Unix appalicatoins as Unix is not open source (Until recently).

Considering all these facts, for home use, Linux is better than Unix.

both are very powerful tools in the IT companies small companies won't use unix or linux.
linux is command line interpreter and also we can use as a (GUI) graphical user interface and it very powerful in the security standard also.

In addition we can also said that LINUX is a PC version of UNIX
