    Bangalooru "Bandh" Today

    well guys,

Today there is a protest going on against the Cauvery Water verdict in Karnataka. So, the silicon valley of India is on strike today. No IT company is working. No vehicle on roads. (Both private and goveronment other than Ambulance and police). Only essential services will be working....

Rather stupid. But anyway, can't help it. Lazing around at home today... Just in info for everyone about what's happening in Bangalore

    Cheers!

    Hi Kalayama,

    Thanks for ur info.
I want to know onething. Why those people are this much angry to give water to tamilnadu? Any specific reason or any bad history to doing like this? Small or Big, each and every thing is shareable. Since i dont know the reason, i am asking one question. Why these fellows not striking when flood is there? At that time they are allowing as much as water into tamilnadu to flood this state more. Why??

    Re: Bangalooru "Bandh" Today

The reason is simple. Though Tamilnadu claims they need water more than Karnataka, Karnataka is already using ALL the water they've got. There are just too many irrigation canals in the district of Mandya which supply water to thousands of hectares of land. And there are already plans of including more land for iirigation using Cauvery water. (There are many places where proper irrigation fascility is not present).

To add to that entire Bangalore's water supply comes from Cauvery. Remember rainfall in Bangalore isn't all too great. If there is one thing which has stopped Bangalore from lack of water, it is cauvery. Remember, if the rainfall gets delayed by two weeks, the water supply in Bangalore will be reduced to once in 3 days, there have been instances when it was once in a week!!! That means, the cauvery water that is stored in the dams of Karnataka are barely enough for its needs.

Agreed, Tamilnadu doesn't have water. JUst because Karnataka has suffecient amount of water doesn't mean it has it in excess. Moreover, Tamilnadu's problem are its own. 2/3 of cauvery flows in Tamil nadu. But, there is no proper rain there. I have seen kids playing cricket in the Great Cauvery River there!!!! (One the way to Chennai from Mangalore).

The situation is that bad. One shares things only when he has them in excess. And Karnataka doesn't have excess water except in rainy season. In rainy season, water is left to Tamilnadu. But Tamilnadu doesn't have proper dams to store it. SO they expect Karnataka to give water on a regular basis which Karnataka can not afford.

The reasons are solid enough. Karnataka doesn't have excess water to be offered. Then why offer and suffer? No matter how much water Karnataka gives, it will not be enough for Tamilnadu. Which is worse, Karnataka itself will not have enough water!!!

If you can just check the water levels in the dams of Cauvery in Tamilnadu, you will be surprised with the results! So, the moral of the story is, Tamilnadu needs water which is definitely true, Karnataka too needs water - that again is true. The proper thing would be to harvest the rain water. Get more dams on the way. Store water in parts, not just in one huge dam.

    Now check this.
The Cauvery award fails on the test of science as it does not consider groundwater availability in the Cauvery basin area. It has only decided on the distribution of the surface water among the claimants. Tamil Nadu, being the lower riparian, has significant availability of groundwater, while Karnataka and Kerala, being the upper riparian, have relatively little of it. Groundwater, in reality, is the water lifeline of this country, with over two-thirds of irrigated foodgrains production, over 90 per cent of rural water supply and over 50 per cent of urban water supply dependent on groundwater.
