Career Change: Need some advice

Hello Folks,

Am in need of some serious advice...hope some of you can bail me out of the crisis here....

I completed my B.Tech in Computer Science and IT and am currently working as a senior software engineer with a reputed organization for the past 3.5 years.

My initial 2 years was in embedded systems domain and the next 1.5 years in telecom domain. But now I am at a stage in my career where I am considering a serious shift from technical to non-technical stream may be into management or something.....as I feel that technical aspects are not my cup of tea anymore and that I would do much much better otherwise! I want to upskill myself in order to explore better opportunities which ofcourse pay better.

I keep reading that after doing some good certifications I can try out better opportunities. Now, I am confused and dont know what to do. Which certification would help me in achieving my goal? Business Analyst, SAP certification? etc etc. I dont know!! Are there any better things than this?

Kindly advice...Looking forward to hear from you....

Regards.

Certainly there are better options for you. I you have a MBA degree that will certainly open the door for being a Business Analyst

Is having an MBA a must to become a business analyst?

Are there any other options? Please suggest a few more....

Changing one's career is similar to starting a new career. The same principles apply as the first field was chosen - which you might already know.

In essence getting into a Business Analyst job is to possess skills of the technical plus the regular MBA stream subjects & skills. A better choice is MBA with either operations/systems. Both need about 2 yrs of steady investment in time and effort Plus your existing technical skills. You could also look at ICFAI or PGDBA courses though at a slightly lower level than MBA.

With your background in strong area/domain, your tech skills are of going to be a huge advantage. You should try the google search which yields tons of information on a BA.

Re: Career Change: Need some advice

Thanks a lot. That simplifies the confusion to a certain extent.
Though an MBA at this point seems to be a good option, I am not sure whether I can go ahead. The thing is I want to switch over to a non-technical area from my present working environment(as a senior s/w engineer)...I could not decide on any one particular area that I could focus on. Business Analyst was something which just happened to come to my mind. I am sure there are many other such things which might be there but which I am not aware of....Hence thought that this might be an ideal forum to post my query! I was infact looking forward to some suggestions from the members on what areas I might pursue....

This is like searching in the dark. You will require more time to gather information on your wishes and on the course to choose.... Since you are open to an idea or in other words have no idea as to what to choose..... you must seriously think why you want to shift out now.... Pressure? unhappy work environment? not your field of work? many possibilities..... You must be sure you understand why you want to switch over to non-technical env... Good luck.

Re: Career Change: Need some advice

Yeah I need to research and gather some information....well talking about pressure...I can handle that very well and I have a proven track record to speak about. Unhappy work environement is not an issue at all....I feel its not my field of work...As if I am doing something which I am not much interested in but still I go ahead and give it my 100% !!

Thanks a lot for the guidance as some of my earlier confusions have been cleared!

Regards.
