Hi Guys,

A family have a swimming pool in their garden situated between four beautiful oak trees.

They are disappointed with it and want to double the length of each of its sides and keep it perfectly square.

On the other hand, they do not want to cut down the trees.

How can they fit a new square swimming pool, which is exactly four times the size of the current one (twice as long and twice as wide), within the trees?

It is quite simple.

Let us say earlier each side of the swimming pool is 10m long and oak trees are on each corner.

Now they just need to expand the swimming pool in such a way that each edge of the old swimming pool is now exactly bisects each side of the new swimming pool...In this case each side of the new swimming pool will be 20m which is 4 time greater than the original one.

They can rotate the pool's layout by 45 degrees and it will fit.

Hi Rijus,

Turning 45 degrees will increase the lengths of the sides, but will it become twice the original length? I think if the original length of a side was 10m, then the new side will be 10 root 2 meters and the new area will be twice the original area (not four times original area)

Please correct if I am wrong

Hi Gupu,

By Rotating the pools layout by 45 degree, u ll definitely get twice as long and twice as wide, which is exactly four times the size of the current one within the trees.

You are right. The sides of the enlarged square pool are equal to the diagonal of the original pool; hence the area of the enlarged pool is twice the area of the original pool, and the sides are enlarged (as you correctly write) by a factor of sqrt(2).

Dont be confused guys. By turning pools layout by 45 degree, u ll get twice as long and twice as wide, within the trees.There is no complicated calculations.Draw the diagram , rotate & see what happens .I think u guys getting wrong with this pool layout direction within the trees.
