job (career) change advice

I have seen a few similar titles in this furum. Hey, I am here to add another.

My husband has been working for a company for a long time in software engineer related role. The job entails some degree of coding, customer support, testing (both hardware & s/w, but no usage of testing tools like robo/winrunner etc), design. He was doing quite well at that stage.

Then quite some time back this part of the company changed direction/projects. The new project moves into a totally different field as far as his background is concerned (very h/w oriented). Since then he found it a big struggle (he probably should have changed job when the direction started to change).

As he has not really been doing coding for quite a while (count in yrs) it is unlikely he can get a developer job. We've been looking at tester jobs but it seems they require another set of skills like winrunner etc etc. Also, even if he can get a tester job, I think it will be an entry-level. We also looked at application support work but there's so few around here and they demand strong knowledge in this-n-that area.
He himself doesn't mind an entry level job, e.g in testing, but I've heard stories of very skilled worker got turned down as 'over-qualified'.

I just wonder if anyone can provide some advice as what he can do, esp in this terrible down turn.
