Why do we catalog a dataset in JCL?

DISP=(NEW,CATLG,DELETE) would catlg the file for successful job completion & delete the errorneous file fo job abends

DISP=(,CATLG) would do, Even if job abends, it would keep the dataset catlogued.
FOr restart, CA11 or IDCAMS to delete the old file would be needed
