There can be many reasons.
for eg;

1. You opt for a newer DBMS which can give you better performance if you change the data model.

2. Your business requirements/processes have changed and you want to incorporate those changes.

3. Your database may be catering to newer applications which may lead to changes.

4. Your organization may be going for SOA/ EAI etc.

Sounds heavy, isn't it
