Unable to use a JOIN in SQL stmt for db_record_check in WR

I'm attempting to use a JOIN in a SQL statement for a db_record_check. WR blocks the use of a JOIN. Using db_connect, db_execute_query and db_get_field_value seems cumbersome. Any ideas on a clean db check execution?

Ultimately, I would like to take user input (1234). Assign it to a variable(CLIENT_NUM = 1234). Use the variable in the AUT. Then use that variable to validate the database (db_record_check = CLIENT_NUM). Ideas? THANKS.
