DS designer,Manager,Director and Administrator are called DS clients as Datastage software follows the client server technology.
It has a repository or server repository that is UV database(universe) that gets installed when you are are installing the server component of DS.(not the same as server version of DS against parallel version). After you have installed the servers component, you would need to install the client components also so that you may be able to design jobs and run them through director and and use other components like manager and administrator to define a DS project.
