Every liquid has a vapor pressure ( the pressure at which liquid evaporates). If the suction pressure falls below vapor pressure of liquid , Cavitation occurs. Which results into vacuum creation & bubble formation. Due to which pump flow decreases.
NPSH is a minimum head required at the suction to prevent the Cavitation
