It maintain stability of the system
...as well as voltage level.reduction in reactive power will not supply rated power to the load ....motor etc..interesting point is that capacitor... and inductor always work on reactive power .....

Reactive power is required by reactive components (C and L). It is required for setting up magnetic flux around current carrying conductor and for charging capacitor and setting up electric flux in dielectric.

if reactive power is zero the system o/p is zero.
