Elevator in British English is lift.

since safety and performance of the elevator is of prime importance, most of the testing will be concentrated in these areas.

Testing an elevator:
1. Look and feel of the elevator
- does it adhere to the customer/company requirements?
- button color change when someone pushes it?
- Is company logo displayed?
- does a small screen to display daily news?
- Is there a security camera inside the elevator?

2. Performance of elevator
- How much time does it take to move between floors with/without load
- how does the elevator react to maximum load; how does it react to overloading?
- How much time does the elevator take to close/open doors?
- If there are multiple elevators on each floor, what is the response time of the others when one or more is/are engages?

3. Safety
- when an obstacle is placed in the elevator entrance, do the doors remain opened?
- When a obstacle is left for more than the stipulated time, do the elevator doors close automatically and let out a loud sound?
- When an obstacle is left at the elevator entrance, does the elevator move?
- How much shock does the spring in the ground floor absorbs during a free-fall event from 1st, 2nd,..top most floor?
- If elevator is stuck between floors, can it be opened to free the trapped person(s)?

4. functional testing
- Does the elevator reach the correct floors upon pushing a floor button?
- Does the elevator stop when "stop" button is activated?
- Does the elevator reach the correct floor when "up" or "down" arrow is pushed?
- Is sound produced when a button is pushed? If yes, does it comply with the settings?

so on and so forth.
