Capacitor bank is the series and parallel connection of capacitors to enhance overall rating as well as to vary the rating to required value.

Capacitor banks are used in Power electronic networks to suppress the voltage ripples in DC voltage as well as to maintain fixed voltage across the terminals.

Capacitor banks are used in Power system network to improve power factor as well as to boost up the voltage level to required value by supplying the (lagging) reactive power to system.

capacitor banks are basically used for power factor improvement. they are used by companies distributing power, due to induction load at homes and industries, power factor lags and to correct it and bring power factor near to unity capacitor banks are used. lagging power factors has several disadvantages so it is required to correct it.

It is a proven fact that Capacitor banks cause an a.c. humm on copper telephone lines. In some cases, power companies have agreed to remove the capacitor banks when they caused this problem in entire neighborhoods. This was discovered by Bell Labs Noise mitigation experts many years ago.
