selection of automation tool is a critical process there are number of events that occur during the tool selection
but the main selection criteria will include

• Accomplishment of specified tool objectives
• Ease of use
• Ease of installation
• Minimum processing time
• Compatibility with other tools
• Low purchase or lease cost
• Documentation, Training, and Support availability

After this test manager will try to find the candidate tools, he will review the candidate tool and try shortlist the tools based on the requirements. At the final stage it will go for the management approval and if it get approved then tool Acquisition activity will start.

Management will ask to create a acquisition plan after number of procedure tool get procured. Journey of test manager will not end here it will continue , he has to work on the installation , implementation , training plan, tool reports, modification if needed and finally if all the criteria met and goals are achieved then it is said that tool acquisition and implementation is successful.

Selection of tools completely depends on the needs of the project.
If your projects requirement is only for checking the functionality of the application then tools like regression testing tool and performance tool may be required.
If your project is concerned about multiple users loging at the same time, then a load testing automation tool will be useful.
Similarly if your project is concerned about the security (say for example Banking Application), then security testing tool will come into play.
So selection of tool is completely context dependent. So one should always select tools fulfilling the requirement of the project.
