What is the difference between website and web application with reference to testing?

A web application is a website. web applications are subset of the word website.
Definition of website is "A computer connected to the internet that maintains a series of web pages on the World Wide Web"
If the website is used an application then it will become web application.
coming to your question there is no real difference between both the words. in general we term website as some thing which cotains lot of web pages which has informative content on it (Just like some news web sites etc).
In reference to testing we have to concetrate more on functionality part of the website if it is basically meant for an usage as an application.
we have to concetrate more on UI if it is just a static website.
