Led is made of compound elements i.e combination of two elements like GaAs,Gaph etc..the light emission is due to transmission of electrons...it is also a PN junction diode...A elementary compound can never act as a LED like SI,GE.

LEDs are made of direct band gap elements whereas as general PN junctions are made of indirect band gap elements.

In LEDs while a carrier is making transition from conduction to valence band the released  energy is in the form of photon (light!) while in normal PN junction this energy is released in the form of heat.
