when water flowing thru a pipe and if it suddenly stopped a pressure wave eqiuvalent to sound will be created and it moves to and fro and it causes damage to pipe  by suddenly hitting the pipe wall.this is termed as water hammering

When water flows from pipe it does have constrained motion & when supply is being cut suddenly, water particle tends to continue its motion but it doesn't so. Therefore the pressure wave is been generated in the pipeline and its intensity sometimes goes beyond the critical value that damages the wall of the pipeline. That effect is called water hammering. that may sometime leads to removal of pipe material due to water hammering noise production is inheritance.

If a pipe is of 1000 Mts in length and water is flowing through it..when the pipe is not cut..water will flow through out the 1000 Mts.. but when is it cut at around 500 Mts, the resistance offered to the flow drops after the 500th Mts but the flow remains the same...So, pressure after the 500th Mts will get reduced..
