There are lot of method of power transmission like.
1) Gear drive
2) Chain drive
3) Pulley drive
4) Belt drive
5) Rope drive
6) Cam & follower
7) Sheave drive

Generally the engine power transmitted to the differential through propeller shaft. Then the differential transmit the power to the rear wheels.

Instead of that, we can go for hydraulic drive. That is engine coupled with hydraulic system that will create hydraulic pressure that we can pass it to the hydraulic drive.
The hydraulic drives consists of cam & piston. Thr oil pressure pushes the piston, that piston moves the cam, this cam integarted with gear rings. That will transmits the power to the wheel. We should have separate dirve for all wheels. I thik this method is too expensive.

Differential is used because while turning the velocity of inner and outer wheel are differnt so if we do not use differntial skidding can take place, alternative for differntial is to power just one of the wheel in the axle.
