A defect having top priority and/or top severity needs to be resolved first.  Because it may be a surestopper, so without resolving that we could not proceeed further testing.

First resolve defects with High-Priority. Testing process cannot proceed further, with defects having high priority.

Hi
There are two thing in a project in the concern of defect
1. Severity
2. priority

Priority identifies the importance of the defect. IF it is blocking issue, then it must be
resolver first.Blocking means you can not execute the test cases without working that feature, even if
you do the testing that will be partial testing and agian you have to verify all the TC so that will be a effort wastage.
It is also possible that severity can be fatal but it does not mean that it will be on higher priority

While resolving the defects the following things are considered
- High priority 
- High Severity
- Release schedule
- Defect effect to the other functionality
If the defect is show stopper it should be resolved.
