in CI engines...the kinetic energy which is lost during braking is partially recovered by a simple change in the cylinder design.....an additional valve called charging valve which leads to a separate air chamber ....now wen the vehicle needs a stop,...the braking is not applied wen the vehicle is in top speed say abt 130 kmph....the vehicle is switched for pneumatic operation wen the following happens......the fuel supply is cut off and the charging valve is opened......the incoming air gets compressed by the reciprocating piston and gets into the chamber at high pressure......the engine acts as an air compressor.....now air gets compressed till the KE is high enough....and this process leads to slowing of the vehicle speed ....brakes are applied judiciously by the driver.......the compressed air can be used for quick acceleration of the vehicle ....or anything which can be made use of .......the efficiency is proved to increase by a satisfactory amount
