Configuration management is a central repository which stores information related to the project & gives access for individuals to the project. Ex: Tester will be given access to the tester relatd documents only he can't be given access for developers apllications or documents.

Ex: MicroSoft VSS (Visual Source Safe) is a majorly used configuration management tool. some companies have their own management tools.

This tool will be used when the client offers some changes in the delivered software product. In this various levels will be there like CR(change request),CCB(CHANGE CONTROL BOARD),etc. whenever client request for change in the product he will give a request in the change Request File .

in that client gives wat r the requirements to be added to the made software product.then the file moves to the change control board after that the developers will make some changes to the older versions and those versions should reach the client new requirements from there new versions will be raised.

CVS(Concurrent Version System)---Free tool open Source

Configuration management tool is used to manage the changes in the software application.
If one developer change the existing code then the colleagues autometically know the updating status using configuration management tool. This is same for testing like test case management.
