Most applications that we test here are in environments which are not production-like in terms of the hardware allocated. You will provided an example of a production vs. test environment, How would go about performance testing in the event that our test and production environments are not alike.

1. You can install virtualization softwares to emulate the hardware configurations in production.

2. Perform the load test after office hours.  Load testing is usually the final stage of testing; that is the pre-deployment testing.

This is the most common situations faced by all testers.

There is a Transaction Processing Performance Council aka TPC (www . tpc . org)
It gives a detailed report of any H/W machine in terms of Transaction per Cost.
With this you can get TPC of your test env vs. TPC of your production env. Compare the two benchmarks.
Although it may not be 100% accurate since you always have different parameters to keep in mind other than machine such as network, etc.... But it helps....
