Hope this does anser your question -

General System Information Tools/Utilities
uname -a -- brief OS and kernel information.
dmesg -- kernel messages given during booting.
cat /var/log/messages -- is the same as dmesg
tail -f /var/log/messages -- show the last couple of lines and keep outputting new lines
kinfocenter -- good overview
