As of my knowledge
Product based company have their own products say ex. Microsoft.

Project based company is basically a service company do services for product company based on some mutual agreement (Wipro as a service company do the work of Microsoft)

Product:   whole company/world will produced one s/w based on market requirement. Project:   s/w will developed based on client requirement. 
Project-bases comapny : Basing on the specific customer.
