is the original name for the product we know today as Adaptive Server Enterprise.

Sybase SQL Server is the RDBMS developed by Sybase Inc (now an SAP company) which is now called as Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise is the enterprise version and a flagship product of Sybase. Another low end version is the Sybase Adaptive Server Anywhere which is also called as Sybase ASA. The database engine behind the Microsoft SQL Server and Sybase SQL Server is the same - i.e. SQL Server and was being developed by Sybase Inc and marketed by Microsoft Corp. However with the split in the two companies trying to market the product in their own way and due to revenue share the Sybase version of SQL Server was renamed to Sybase Adaptive Server after version 11.5 onwards to keep it seperate from Microsoft Version. The Sybase SQL Server now Sybase Adaptive Server is also called - Sybase ASE which is short of the Adaptive Server Enterprise.

If we look at Sybase ASE and Microsoft SQL Server we will soon realise that the basic implementation of the two DBMS is nearly the same and even with same bugs and missing features and hence can confirm that the basic engine behind the two is the same.
