I suggest you go through these books:Testing Computer Software.Software Testing in the real world.Effective Methods of Software Testing.But nothing can replace "practical exposure".

There is no standard procedure for testing, depends on your role. Suppose for one perticular application start from test planning and design, preparation of test cases(as requirements) and executing them. Rising defects, retesting and closing defects.
