AS/400 computers are not treated as Mini Computers. They are Mid Range computers.

AS/400 has almost all the characteristics of a Mainframe computer. The Major difference being - AS/400 computers are targetted towards Mid sized business where are Mainframes are targetted towards Big sized business.

Now coming to the question of how to identify a computer as Mainframe or Mini ...
A Mainframe computer (server) is basically bulkier in size than an ordinary Mini computer. (If you are at the proximity of the server)

Incase you are away from the server... The emulation software that you use will help you identify if you connecting to a Mainframe or not.

RE: How to recognize that a computer is -Main Frame OR...
The question is largely a thing of the past as there are mainframe operating systems currently running on laptops. These laptops are officially licensed by IBM and for all intents and purposes function exactly like their big brothers. In fact since the advent of Hercules any Wintel machine is able to function as a mainframe.Any more the distinction is purely a matter of what operating system is running. z/OS z/VM or z/VSE are usually considered mainframe operating systems. And if mainframe is a thing of the past so too is miniframe.
