A project can have more than one product to be dev/test. Wrking on all these products is generally called a project.

Eg: Time Maintenance

A product is the application under dev/test

Eg: Time Tracker Application

Phanikumar & Vinu, u both are correct. I'll just add some more to the answer.

Project is an application/output, developed as per the specifications given by one particular customer. It is very much CUSTOMIZED.

On the other hand, Product is a STANDARDIZED application. Product is already developed keeping in mind a particular market segment. Then it is marketed & sold to the customers. Product is expected to be more general, so that it matches the needs of all customers. e.g. Tally, Finacle etc.

Rahul.

hai

Go to a sweet shop and buy a laddu, which is already made by the shop, that is product. Go to the shop and order him for a laddu as per your requirements like what is the required quantity, sugar content, color, number of laddus etc.. that is a project. hahahahaa, just assume sweet shop is a software company and you are a client.

Definitions of product and project vary between companies.  Here are a few variations on the theme:

BASIC DEFINITION
A product is a deliverable that satisfies customers' wants or needs.  A project is a carefully planned and collaborative enterprise that is intended to achieve a particular aim.  During the course of delivering a product, a company typically carries out many projects.

PRODUCT LIFE CYCLE DEFINITION
A product is a deliverable intended to create revenue by satisfying the want or needs of the company's market base.  A project is a deliverable intended to create revenue by satisfying the wants or needs of a client.  When a product is produced, the company that created the product manages the product's entire life cycle.  When a project is completed, the client for whom the product was created often manages the remainder of the product's life cycle.

REQUIREMENTS DEFINITION
The requirements for products are established by the company that designs and creates them.  The requirements for projects are established by the company's clients.

CUSTOMIZATION DEFINITION
Some companies create products that must be customized for their clients.  These companies create products, but the process of customization is carried out through projects.
