What is open sourceand why linux is so called?

linux is called is so because its source code can be obtained from internet and u can modify the linux urself without taking care of all those patents and copyrights...ya one thing is there that u should'nt sell that ur self prepared linux 'cos this is not allowed..

Open Source is a consortium of programmers who make the source code of their  applications available to the public for free ( the application may not be free). Linux was named after a finnish student Linus Torvalds who gave the first linux kernel.

hi dear linux is called open source because a person (programmer) can use linux, they can add or modify new feature in linux and simple meaning of open source is you add & modify code.

Hey sorry man but open source is not just limited to linux even there are windows and mac applications that are developed having the open source liscence

Kernel of Linux Operating System is written in C and it is called open source because changes can be made to kernel.
