Non-functional requirements are those requirements which are not explicitly mentioned by the customer. They are basically subjective in nature and differ from one person to another. The example of non-functional requirements are usability, reliability, portability, scalability, security, etc.

A Non-functional requirement (amongst others) is Maintainabilty, portability, useabilty (the site is slow and so the site needs to be speeded up). So, Non-functional behaviour is about how a product works or how it achieves its external behaviour. EG, it may be fast or slow, or easy or difficult to use. These are non-functional characteristics, in this case related to performance and usability. Non-functional characteristics need to be tested just as carefully as functional behaviour; a system that does everything you want it to but is so slow in operation that you cannot get your job done is obviously unacceptable.
