In Product Testing tester will have more scope for his creativity, Imgination and usability issues. Here he can spend more time on making the applicaiton more user friendlly. Lot of time will there to do a through testing and also he can execute all the scenarios what he wants to execute.

In Application testing, the tester has to stick to the requirements given by the client, less scope for any changes/suggestions/enhancements given by tester. Time pressure to comeplete the testing because of delivary dates. Due to time pressure he will not test most of the scenarios and concentrate only of some major flows. he will not dig in and out of the application.

The question leads to me believe that you or someone is trying to make a decision on which direction to go...so here is the big picture for you.

As mentioned in previous answers, product testing will let you develop or hone your imaginative and creative side as company will invest more time in QA as their profits are based off of the product so QA becomes utmost important not that it is any less on the services side. But there is a down side to working for a product based company: you are stuck with their set of technologies and domain (mainly domain).

In a services based company, you can work on lot different domains and different technologies and platforms. After internet was conceived, technologies have come and gone, but domains stayed or newer one have cropped up.
Domains that stayed: oil & gas, manufacturing, finance, banking, sales to name a few
New domains: eCommerce, social networking etc.

The take away from this is domain knowledge is more important in today's world than the technologies you know. You should know have experience/knowledge of old and newer technologies because it will allow you to work on legacy conversion application. But the downside to working for services company is time pressure on your shoulders and extra long hours.

I have worked for both product based and services company. Any day working for services company is way better unless you are working for Apple or Google. :)
