What is OLAP?

A tool to evaluate and analyze the data in the data warehouse using analytical queries.  
 
A tool which helps organize data in the data warehouse using multidimensional models of data aggregation and summarization.  
 
Supports the data analyst in real time and enables online analysis of data with speed and flexibility.

This helps to do Business analysis of you data, but normal reporting tools are not supporting to Business analysis. This is the major difference between reporting tool and OLAP tool.

OLAP is an Online Analytical Process, Which used especially for analysis purpose but not for reporting. It is a GateWay between the Business user and DWH.

OLAP means Online Analytical Processing.
It is a database which contain Historical data and the oldest data which is used to the business people.
It comes from the data you have put in an OLTP database.
OLTP means Online Transaction Processing.
