What is the difference between Summary column and Placeholder column in reports?

A Summary Column Return a Single Value on multiple records.  Place Holder Column Holds a Data as a Variable. You can pass a data from one group to other group by the help of Place holder column.

SUmmary Column is where we can have the sum of particular column

eg: sum of total salary

place holder column: is the one where you can substitute the code written at runtime to a field which is empty at the design time.
