SAS works and works well by providing more features than other tools. SAS is popular because it was the first of it's kind way back in the early 70s. There was SAS and something called SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences).  I worked with both at Rutgers, the state university of New Jersey and SAS was more powerful.  Even then SAS supported database interfaces and had it's own internal database system and query language despite the fact that it was all batch then (no workstations, gui, pc,interactive.....nothing but batch)

Hi,

who told only SAS is the popular tool, you are going to do the business analysis depends on your business requirements you need to choose your tools, people already having SQL server the had complementary demo version of SAS, they started to build their cubes and schema, then companies they don?t want to migrate from there(b?cos migration is not a small process) they started to maintain in SAS itself, in future if they face any inflexibility defiantly they have to go to some other tool, we could not able to say any tool is the best tool, all the tools are good in different area.

Have a Great Day

Cheers,

hi everybody.

There is a lot of difference between SAS  and othere tools.

SAS is a tool which is a combination of three basic features.

1) It is a reporting tool.
2) It is a ETL tool and
3) It is also a forecasting tool.

whereas the tools other than SAS

             - consists of the first feature. eg: BUSINESS OBJECTS, COGNOS.
             - or consists of the second feature.eg: INFORMATICA.
             - or consists of the first and second features. eg: BUSINESS OBJECTS.

No other tool has the power of forecasting feature. Hence SAS is used in mostly Clinical trials and healthcare industry.

Hope you are satisfied.

Bye.

SAS gets adopted by the business groups that do not have a large IT support staff as SAS provides the complete DW environment including ETL and reporting in one easy to manage package. See http://www.dwoptimize.com/2007/02/latest-data-warehouse-industry-trends.html for more comparisons.
