Similar to client-service applications testing, but you have to know how to operate basic TSO and ISPF commands and menus, view mainframe files, look at and use SDSF or other output tool, log on CICS and transactions, use FTP or another transfer protocol, submit the batch job - it's for QA testing of mainframe applications.

And plus, QA testing for another platform, like WEB and/or client-service, since the mainframe is usually back-end.

It can be learned pretty quickly, but it needs an access to mainframe.

Mainframe testing is a testing that includes black box testing. No need of JCR and all programming language necessary. You should know basics of it like navigations, how to test the application etc..

read JCR, CICS, Batch processing, Navigations,

As far as a knowledge of coding, you will need to learn how to modify existing JCL code. You also should have a basic knowledge of programming to the point that you can learn to modify the data you may be given to suit the particular test you are running. But----by no means do you have to be an expert coder from day one. What you need is some exposure to computer programming, an open mind, patience with yourself, curiosity and be willing to learn.
