Windows NT supports multitasking with the help of preemptive multitasking which is based on preemptive operating system.
The operating system takes control of the processor from a task in two ways:

When a task that has higher priority becomes ready to run,the currently running task loses control of the processor and the processor is assigned to the high priority task irrespective of time quantum.

When a tasks time quantum (or time slice) runs out.
