It is the systematic approach to be foolowed if any changes are to be done in project requirements like srs, HLD,LLDs. As it is difficult to reach out to each employee and tell the changes that are done in the project requirements, this is useful.  
 
It is like to maintaining a centralized database. 
 
Eg: CVS server.
