if we define nr= no of rows at the beginning and ns= no. of students in each row at the beginning, and ts = total number of students,

then we have (nr+10)*(ns-4)=nr*ns and (nr-8)*(ns+5)=nr*ns

therefore we have -4nr+10ns-40=0 and 5nr-8s-40=0

that leads to nr=2ns=40

this gives the answer 40*20=800
