TCS Interview Procedure -- Technical and HR interviews

successfully completed my tech+(hr+mr) rounds, and was selected in mumbai recruitment.

thanks for each and every group member.

my interview was held in Andheri (Mumbai). the interview was cool . the panel consisted two members. they asked me the following questions.

tell abt urself?

tell abt ur project? (they asked 3 to 4 que while i was explaining)

DBMS ( different keys, normal forms, relationship between tables)

OS( functions of os, algorithms of cpu, paging)

Softaware Engineering( SDLC, Testing techniques, unit testing, modular testing)

C++ ( polymorphism, virtual fuctions)

LInked lists and searching techniques.

Unix( 1 que, i could not answer for that)

they asked questions for 30 to 35 minutes.

i was unable to answer for 3 to 4 questions.(outof 20 to 25)

but the interviewers were so frindly.

they examine the candidate's confidence level and the way of explaining.

After completing the technical round, one person took me to upstairs where our HR+MR interview was conducted.

the MR person asked me

1) tell abt urself?

2)abt my gab between my graduation and PG(MCA).

3)asked abt cultivation ( as i told i helped my father in cultivation during my gab)

4) why should i hire u?

5) ur objective after 5 yrs?

6) do u know oracle? ( i said oracle 8, then he asked why oracle 8 instead of 9i,10i)

HR madam asked me....

your strengths

abt work agrement

have u attended any interview before this

abt relocation

abt medical test

i answered for all technical and hr questions with confidence.

pls go through

c, c++ ,data structures, DBMS concepts , OS and software engineering .

then definately u will gain the confidence. they will ask only fundamentals from these.

if u find any walk in , go for that,howmuch ever it may be far.

i went for mumbai walk-in from Hyderanbad.

hi friends,

i had taken tcs test last day.here is my experience:

the first round is an online test with qns under 3 sections- verbal,
aptitude and critical reasoning. i heard that all qns are from
barrons. u can refer old papers in chetana . they almost follow the
same pattern. once you finish a section you are not able to change any
answers. as the test is online ,once we finish a section, the last
section is inaccessible.but within a section we are able to go back to
old qns and change answers.instructions that they gave before
test-click submit after every answer and dont click exit unless u r
told to.once you finish these three sections you get the qns for
psychometry. but they told that u need not do it and asked us to
exit.no negative marks

when i took the test there was some s/w complaint so the results that
were displayed was not right. we had to wait for arnd 3 hrs to know
it.later it was corrected and results were displayed instantly

next is gd-one person from our group was asked to select a topic . she
chose "should women work or not" boys were asked to support working
women and girls were asked to counter it.in some groups they gave the
topic. it was not like usual gd; they give each person a chance to
speak. no interruptions in between.some other topics were-best country
other than india, pollution can be controlled etc. mostly topic was
decided by students.they make the group list alphabeticaly so you can
decide the topic in prior if u want.dont take time to think while u
speak.

next we had tech interview.qns i had was-project, inner classes and
accesing objects from them in java. private protected and public
class. doubly linked list.quick sort .he also asked me to introduce
myself, family background and why do i want to join tcs.

hr-strength weakness(for some he asked to give 3 reasons why he should
be knocked out from the selection process. dont give 3 just give one
weakness if u like to)he also asked some tch qns. he asked me abt
sdlc.then he asked types of feasibility studies then abt types of
financial risks involved.

then there was mgnt review- we heard that normaly it would be qns on
bond relocating etc. but for all of us it was similar to hr.

our experience was that people who take the test in the initial batch
had higher chance of advancing to next round. filteration increases as
time progress

they told that they would announce results in a week.

i would like to thank ppl like jithin whose earlier mail on tcs was
really helpful.

Interview

There were around 8 - 10 panels for tech intrw held at TCS Karapakkam Chennai.Environment was excellent.
People from TCS were very soft and had a cheerful face.

In my panel two persons of age around 35 40 yrs interviewed me.Tech intrw was held for around 55 min. Slightly drilling but easy.After clearing tech I attended HR where one young man interviewed me.It went for half an hour exactly.Most of them were only personal questn and some tech Qs.On my time slot 5 ppl attended in that same panel and only 2 cud get thro.

For another friend the tech held for just 10min.They asked 2 gen. Qs like where he is from (Ambattur) and how he reached that office.Then 2 tech Qs 1) Shannons theory ? Ans: I don t know 2) Diff betn up85 & 86. He told correctly.He got selected.

So it depends on ur luck to get a good panel.

Technical Interview

Introduce ur self.

First person started ..
He asked my mark sheets from which Qs were poured from various subj I d studied in my BE (ECE) syllabus

Favourite subj.?
Digital

How abt mp?
Draw the architecture of 8085?Explain each block?Interrupts and its types? Flags?

Write a program to multiply 2 nos?Diff betn MOV & MVI?Diff betn 85 & 86And some more ?Latest mp used?

Next person started ..Whats inside a CPU of PC? Inside processor? Whats a MODEM? working?
If 2 PCs connected to a server using 2 MODEMs what is the fn of each modem?

Back from first person meanwhile the 2nd person was going through my marksheets and certificates.

Lets move 2 ur fav subj Digital -Draw the diag of OR and NOR? OR internal ckt diag ?
I managed to draw a diag which is logically correct ( with 2 transistors ..)

Universal gates? Why? Draw OR using NOR gates? What is multiplexed?

Slowly deviated to analog-Describe abt transistor? Types? Types of BJT? Diag for NPN and PNP?
Differentiate where they r used?
Uses of transistor according to mode of opn.?
Uses of diode?
How it is used as rectifier?
Zener diode?
What is bias?
What is thyristor?
SCR? Where used?
Diff betn thyristor & transistor?
And some more

Then programming How good u r with programming? I know only C.
Asked me to write a pgm.
I m not well versed with programming. I know only conceptually.
Why pointers? Answered
Luckly they skipped the topic.

Then Network Topologies? Bus ring
What u know in networking?
I know only the basics as this was not choosen as our elective.

Then whats ur elective?
Biomedical ..
(I think the person was good in that subj.)

I was caught He fired several questions like
How ECG working?
Stethoscope working?
BP ? and more
How pressure converted to signal?
Transducers?

Then came to the project Explain ur proj.
I explained clearly with proj report.
Some Qs on project.
I myself added that I did with 3 other students from different states and could manage to complete the project successfully.

Finally general Qs You did a proj in digital design and why do u want to come to software?
Why not hardware?
What guarentee u give that u won t shift to hardware after 2 yrs saying u don t like S/w?
Another person asked what u studied in Engineering economics & mgmt?
R u interested in this subj?
I frankly said it s a bit boring subj. coz there is nothing to learn and this is the subj where we write stories.They smiled.
If we put u in proj dealing with mgmt ..difft from what u ve studied in BE r u ready to do that?

U said it s a boring subj. & now ready to switch over to that ?
First of all working at TCS itself is a great pleasure and it would be my duty to develop interest in that subject and shine well in that area.
Finally they asked any Qs 2 us ?
Yes sir!
On what electronics related proj r u working currently?
Then I smiled and said then there is a chance for me to get into electronics based s/w projects .

HR Interview

Introduce urself other than in application.
I told abt my positives and ideologies.While I was saying the 2nd point of my ideology my throat got chocked coz of fear.
Are u alright? Yes sir. I m slightly nervous.Its OK.

Whats ur hobbies?
Playing Tennis and chess.
In chess how its scored?
I said we ve checkmate the opponent king.
He poured more Qs on chess.
I said I used to play chess only with computer just as a time pass and not serious with that.
How many squares r there in a chess board?
1st I said 100 and then said sorry 64 .

How abt tennis? How many sets are played in a match?How it is scored?
said 0 15 30 45 game.I made a damn mistake of saying 45 instead of 40.
He again asked to check and I was still stubborn with my ans.
What is game point? match pt? Deuce?
Who is ur fav. tennis player?Why?
But Pete Sampras everytime defeats Agassi?
Whats ESPIRIT (Dept. assocn)?

What u ve done?
Arranged VLSI conference.
Whats VLSI?
More than 1 million transistors per chip.
Explain sth abt VLSI.

No. of zeros in a million?6
No. of zeros in a lakh?
Got struck (due to tension) and started counting from units digit in mind.Then said 5. I frankly told him I need to count by fingers
He laughed..

Whats ur fav. subj? Digital
Describe OR & NOR gate in a sentence form
What is the IC no. for AND gate?
which co. produces such chips?

Where do u see urself after 3 yrs ?
Whats ur ambition?
Why TCS?(He really got stunned with my knowledge abt TCS)
What way u can provide a s/w that is useful to the community as well as TCS?
I gave some ideas like cognition tech for blind ppl and web-based applns
Why s/w?
Stressed the importance of software with egs.
What efforts u made to get into Software?
Any thing u did for the community welfare?
I gave a finishing touch. As of now I cud help only physically. I think if I m being selected and once if I join TCS I can help ppl even monitorily.

Finally Any Qs to me?
Yes sir!
Whats the training period? 45 days
Whether I can avail transportation facilities from TCS? yes
Whether u do any electronics related proj @ Chennai? No. Its done at Hyd only.
Thanked him and smiled my way back home with great confidence.

I am Himanshu Sardana from Bharati Vidyapeeth's College of
Engineering New Delhi. All thanks to the group members i got selected in TCS.I am sending all the information what i remember.BEST OF LUCK to all.

The online exam was based on previous years pattern.Taken on software called Qubex.THERE WAS NO NEGATIVE MARKING.

3 sections:-

1.)VOCAB:-

duration:20 min.
10 antonynms+ 10 synonyms
2 passeges easy but long.

for this section prepare GRE barrons high frequency word list.
but more importantly prepare excercises given in antonynms
chapter(CH-4 barrons 15th edition).
i got only 2-3 from high frequncy word list but 4-5 from excercises
and TWO FROM EXAMPLES given in the antonynms chapter as it is without
any changes.

so prepare these things well.WORDS WERE NOT REPEATED FROM PREVIOUS
YEARS PAPRES(not even single).

there is no cut off in this section.
if you do 8 out of 20(10 ant + 10 syn) you have done resonably well.

divide your time well in advance.
you should be through with 10 syn + 10 ant in less than or at most 10
min.spend next 6- 8 minutes answering the passage.its easy if you can
read and comprehend fast.
spend next 1- 1.5 min reading and answering the second passage.

in last 30 seconds just forget everything and mark all answers as
there is no negative marking.
ATEMPT ALL QUESTIONS do not leave any.
most of people in our coillege who got through in written(including
me) attenpted all questions.

2.)APTITUDE:-

duration : 40 min.
38 mathematics and logical questions.

this section is very easy but requires fast calculations.
for this section prepare previous years papers well.90 of questions
were repeated.
practice all papers so that you remember all answers without
calculations becoz even figures of 90 questions were unchanged.

if you do this its pretty easy.

however be careful.there is a cut off in this section.so at least
check your answers before you mark your remembered answers and be sure
figures are not changed.

3.)CRITICAL REASONING:-

MOST DIFFICULT SECTION.
duration : 30 min.
3 questions of puzzle type(1 easy 1 good level and 1 very difficult)
all repeated from prevoius years papers.

dont try to remember answers to these puzzles as there are huge in
no.just practice and try to develop your puzzle solving techniques.

refer RS agg(verbel and non verbel aptitude) for these type of
practice questions.

i got 1 question - ocean view harbour view hotel rooms - you can
find it in prevoius year papers.

rest two i dont remember.

TRY TO FOGURE OUT THE EASIEST ONE BY READING FIRST PARA OF EACH
PUZZLE IN HURRY.

be sure to be through with easiest question in less than 10 minutes.
solve the medium level puzzle by spending 15 - 17 minutes.

BE SURE TO SOLVE THESE TWO PUZZLES RIGHTLY AND YOU ARE THROUGH.

spend next two minutes reading all the stuff of third puzzle and try
to answer it.
well if you dont get anything just do this - MARK ALL ANSWERS OF LAST
PUZZLE WITHOUT READING IN THE LAST MINUTE.

Got selected in TCS I want to share my experience with u test is online contains 3 sections

1. Verbal(20min-10syn 10-ant 6-fill in the blanks with sentence 6-reading comp)
some of the words we remember

misapprehension benevolent unwittingly skeptic innocuous tenacious reticent fluster lugubrious langour repudiate gnome lackadaisical cleft versiginious benevolent

2. Aptitude(40 min-40 quant 3-venn dia 3-pie dia)

3. Critical reasoning(30min-3 cr each having 4 qns)
for verbal prep gre barrons high freq words n 15 qns back of every world list n prev paprs i got all qns 4m them.apt is very easy plz go thru the prev paprs b4 going to test.we all got all qns 4m them wth numerical changes.cr is very tough all the cr qns r 4m gre barrons 12th edition.

Next day all who got selected in test r int'vwed there r two int'vws technical & hr.there r 4 panals who int'vwed us each panal consists of 2 presons.in my panal they asked all qns in c ds c++ sub.qns r
oops concept write a prog on stacks using arrays how mem is allocated dynamically in c&c++ virtual functions define entropy laws of td define class&object in my paper prasentation.in other panals they asked our favt sub and asked qns on them it was very cool tell ans so confidently if u donot know ans 4 any of the qns u can say i don't know.
