it should be 75...in 5 min angle = 360/12 = 30 and at 8:30 hr hand is on 8 and min hand on 8 and 1/2  and not on 8

It must be 75

The angle between 6 to 9 is 90

Hence when time 8:30

small hand is in between 9 & 8 That is 15

hence angle is 30+30+15=75

Answer is 75 degrees.

Procedure:

Hour hand movement per hour : 30 degrees
  ---> per minute : 0.5 degrees
Minute hand movement per hour : 360 degrees
  0---> per minute : 6 degrees

 Angle = (hour to minute conversion * 0.5 - minute * 6)
 if (Angle > 360) 
  Angle = 360 - Angle;
 if (Angle < 0)
  Angle = 360 + Angle;

Its got to be 60 degrees. this is because the angle made between the minute hand and the hour hand for each minute is 6 degrees. here the time is said to be 8.30 i.e. there is a 10 mins difference [between 6 and 8]. hence it would 10*6 = 60degrees.

 exact 75 digree              

at 8  pm 
the angle between hour and minute clock= 8*30=240
now 
minute clock move on 30 minute =30*6=180
hour clock move on 30 minute =30*1/2= 15
so angle=
    180-(240+15)= -75digree clockwise
= 75 anticlockwise ans
