Yahoo’s Latest BrowserPlus
Yahoo's offering for open source community has been unveiled: the latest version of BrowserPlus. It could be said that it is just an update but this update is special. It has practically changed the face of BrowserPlus. If you have been following this platform for different browsers, you will notice that it has become more JavaScript friendly especially in streaming data.
There are a lot of updates on the latest BrowserPlus, which is now on version 2.1.6. But let us take a look at some of the pivotal updates of the latest version:
Lighter with More Information
Yahoo has somehow acknowledged that what they are building is a platform for browser plug-ins and not a full framework. Instead of completely dragging the local computer down with a heavier application, the latest browser plus is only 2mb. To help aid developers know more about the latest version, the documentation has also been improved. Full documentation with samples and even access to the forum is included.
Open Yet Secured
The latest update has changed the authority of Yahoo over plug-ins. Instead of being the sole authority in saying what is good or not, the security feature has been placed on the hands of the developers. They are practically free in building the plug-in but they do have to secure their website. This was done by changing the security configuration. Instead of a centralized security protocol, BrowserPlus will now require their developers to implement security protocols per website.
Using of JSON
This is where the improved use of JavaScript is implemented. JSONRequest can now be implemented in BrowserPlus, making it compatible to most browsers. Through JSON, data can be streamed without efforts, without even considering the browser. The challenge of security and compatibility has been single-handedly answered by JSON. Data streaming is not that difficult as XML could be implemented but it cannot answer the different browser concerns.
Ruby Interpreter
Another feature of BrowserPlus that improved the workability of JavaScript with the latest version of BrowserPlus is Ruby Interpreter. Developers could freely code the application and enable BrowserPlus to covert the coding to become an application written in Ruby.
Eventually, the function built will be easily implemented as they have been implemented in Ruby. You could consider it as a built-in framework for developing functions for the client side. The best thing about building the application with Ruby interpreter is that you can practically start small and let the interpreter take care of the rest.
Motion Use and Gaming
Test your might! When you have done these things, it is time to test what you really know. BrowserPlus now comes with a motion controlled game where you are free to make some changes and different innovations. You can consult the documentation and see the source codes.
If you have been familiar with BrowserPlus long enough, you can now make some changes in the motion controlled game (using the mouse) and even add some levels and release it to the community for further development.
