Working in Politics

Posted 08-04-2008 at 12:41 AM by Lokesh M

Whether a democrat or a republican; working in politics will always place you at the end of your seat especially when you are working for a candidate. You will always be on the road and attend meetings just to make sure everything goes well in the face of the people.

Working with a team of political advisors is like being a duck in a pond all the time – you stay calm in front of everybody while you are feet is drastically working overtime just to make ends meet. But it is a fun job that could be equally rewarding if you are candidate wins. You get to have another job or if the candidate loses, you get to have a great recommendation for another job.

Building a Strong Foundation [/color]</h4>
Landing a job in politics is not an easy task. You cannot just come in, present your impressive resume and get hired for the job. Remember that politicians could hire someone better than you anytime because of their power and resources. What you need to do is to build trust with the politician before you get hired. That means becoming a non-paid intern before considered to a paid position.
Politicians do not need someone smart; they need someone who they can trust. That is why most of those who are interested in political career start out young as they establish themselves first with different politicians in different places. You could be an intern for as long as a year which would mean patience and realistic expectations.

Once you have earned your trust with the candidates and politicians, you will be hired for a paid position. Just like in the corporation, you start with entry level jobs. The following are the common entry level jobs in politics. Job descriptions could vary per state but they basically go this way:

.
1. Campaign Staffers
– Always be on your feet as you go with the candidate helping him or her in any way during the campaign period. You get to prepare their speeches, meet with volunteers and talk with other staffers and think of ways to improve the image of your candidate with ease.

2. Field Representatives – Instead of being with the politician most of the time, you are assigned to an area wherein you represent the said politician. You listen to district meetings and help in events related to the politician you represent. You will practically make the people feel that the politician is there through you.

3. Legislative Aides – You will be assigned to tackle a certain issue and work with certain groups who are concerned with that issue. You research on the present laws regarding that issue. You may be assigned to write letters to certain representatives or even the simple constituents regarding that issue.

4. Legislative Correspondents – If you are a writer, you will probably want to aim for this job. You work with the media as you may be required to write press releases and other literature for the candidate.
A job in politics is a very exciting one. As long as you have the patience to be an intern for while first, you will be gaining a good future in the field of politics.
