Temporary to Permanent Position: Know the Ropes
When you’re working as a temp, chances are you’ll be coming in there and work only for a few months. The people around you will know very little about you and the boss might not even notice you until you contract ends. The pay is tolerable but it will never cover almost anything that you dream of. The bad part is that position will stay the same if you don’t do anything. Sure you can use that as a reference as an experience but you’re letting a good chance pass on you.
You could be hired as regular employee
To convince the owner, the boss and the people around you have to be impressed with a lot of things about you.
First is on the way you behave yourself at work. Temps don’t have the workload compared to regulars who are toiling eight hours at work. Show to the company that you can do what the regulars could do. But instead of stepping in on other people just to show your capacity, show your skills by helping the regulars perform at work. Be sure the quality of your work is nothing less than the best.
It is also important to show professionalism while being a temp. Again, even though you really don’t have that much workload compared to the regulars, you have to act like one. Come to work on time and never leave early for work. Before you leave for work, as your boss or the person in charge of the things you will if there is any thing that should be done before you leave. A few extra minutes after the designated time of work should be enough to give you thumbs up rating from your immediate supervisor.
Also part of being professional is to dress the part. Don’t just be too lavish or else you’ll be dubbed as a show off. The good way to dress the part is to consider what the regulars are wearing. It will make you blend with other co-workers and ill be treated just like one.
Networking is another way earning the praise of people around you. Be friendly with everyone and most especially your boss. A good word about you will really get you places. But don’t just create alliances for the sake of being hired. Do this so that you’ll have someone to help you in different tasks in your work as a temp.
Lastly, learn the ropes of the business. As a temp you are only assigned really simple tasks that could be done by almost anyone. Step out of that cave and learn new skills that are related to that job. The eagerness in learning will give your boss and your future co-workers a sign that you are serious about work and would love to work with them. The best thing about this is that even when you are not hired, you learn something which could be applicable for the next temp job or in an actual job interview.
