Question:  what is the look up transformation?

Answer: Use lookup transformation in u’r mapping to lookup data in a relational table, view, synonym.
Informatica server queries the look up table based on the lookup ports in the transformation. It compares the lookup transformation port values to lookup table column values based on the look up condition.

RE: what is the look up transformation?

Lookup transformation in a mapping is used to look up data in a flat file or a relational table, view, or synonym. You can import a lookup definition from any flat file or relational database to which both the PowerCenter Client and Server can connect. You can use multiple Lookup transformations in a mapping.

I hope this would be helpful for you.
