Question:  Can one install Loadrunner on a Virtual Machine. I have tried it several times to no avail. Anyone got tips or tricks in archieving this.

Yes you can install LR on Virtual machines.  Don't install LR when you are connected to the VM server thru Remote desktop instead make use of VNC or PcAnywhere to connect to the vm machine and install.
